Midlatitude Synoptic Scale Systems: Their Kinetic Energy Budgets and Role in the General Circulation
نویسنده
چکیده
The kinetic energy budgets of several examples of synoptic scale systems are reviewed. Included are systems containing a major cyclone development, the immediate cyclone vicinity, and the anticyclone preceding the cyclone development. These are then considered in terms of their role in the general circulation of the middle latitudes. Results show that the cyclone system and cyclone vicinity are respectively about two and five times more active energetically than the general circulation. Further, when averaged with results of Petterssen and Smebye, the resulting mean cyclone system accounts for about onethird of the energetic activity of the middle latitudes. On the other hand, circulations associated with the anticyclone case exhibit much less intense energetic properties.

Three-dimensional parameterizations of the synoptic scale kinetic energy and momentum flux in the Earth’s atmosphere
We present a new set of statistical-dynamical equations (SDEs) which can accurately reproduce the threedimensional atmospheric fields of synoptic scale kinetic energy and momentum flux. The set of equations is closed by finding proper parameterizations for the vertical macroturbulent diffusion coefficient and ageostrophic terms. The equations have been implemented in a new SD atmosphere model, ...

[1] Human activity has increased the concentration of the earth’s atmospheric carbon dioxide, which plays a direct role in contributing to global warming. Mid-tropospheric CO2 retrieved by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder shows a substantial spatiotemporal variability that is supported by in situ aircraft measurements. The distribution of middle tropospheric CO2 is strongly influenced by surfac...
متن کاملEnergy of Midlatitude Transient Eddies in Idealized Simulations of Changed Climates
As the climate changes, changes in static stability, meridional temperature gradients, and availability of moisture for latent heat release may exert competing effects on the energy of midlatitude transient eddies. This paper examines how the eddy kinetic energy in midlatitude baroclinic zones responds to changes in radiative forcing in simulations with an idealized moist general circulation mo...
متن کاملImpact of Dynamics and Atmospheric State on Cloud Vertical Overlap
The observation and representation in general circulation models (GCMs) of cloud vertical overlap are the objects of active research due to their impacts on the earth’s radiative budget. Previous studies have found that vertically contiguous cloudy layers show a maximum overlap between layers up to several kilometers apart but tend toward a random overlap as separations increase. The decorrelat...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Heat and Moisture Budgets over the ASTEX Region
Rawinsonde data collected from the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX) were used to investigate the mean and temporal characteristics of large-scale heat and moisture budgets for a 2-week period in June 1992. During this period a large apparent heat sink and an apparent moisture source were observed near inversion base. Analyses from other budget studies show that similar conve...
